I read a lot, but like my behavior, what I read—in itself a behavior— is determined by the environment. Here is a list of the things I read and how they are different depending on the environment.
For Work
I read press releases for work. I rarely read them for pleasure— unless maybe if it is about the “heart-beat bill.” This example below will show why I do not read press releases when I am curled up in bed at night—I would rather slip an ambient in my drink.
I also read the news. On occasion I will buy a Times Union addition from the Stewarts to read over breakfast and coffee—when I have time to kill, which is rare. But for the most part I use twitter as my ever-updating front page. I read it first thing in the morning when I get to work, to see if anything exciting is taking place in Capital. Also in the morning I read the AM Roundup on the Capitol Confidential blog and Liz Benjamin’s morning post. I follow state legislators and their staff as well as member of the Albany press. This is how I keep on top of the goings-on for my beat which is New York state politics.
Crap I read at work: the New York Post.
What I read for pleasure at work: the New York Post. But I also follow the New York Rangers on twitter, so I can keep up with the only hockey team—still in place for the playoffs!
For Fun
I am trying to wean myself off of Trivia Crack; a terrible affliction.
But I read a lot of books for fun, mostly of the mystery genre including Dennis Lehane, Thomas Pynchon, Colin Bateman, Arturo Perez-Reverte.
I also read the classics:
Ernest Hemingway: it’s clichéd for a reason.
William Faulkner
And my favorite (This isn’t Hitchcock):
Vladimir Nabokov
These are among many writers I have added to my collection over the years that keeps on growing. There’s a backlog that has me booked til I’m 40 (take that pun New York Post).
